How to play Tangram

Read the aim of Tangram, then make your first move. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
